Intel plans to convert its 200mm Fab 12 to 300mm production. The facility is
located in Arizona. Costs for the conversion project are estimated at $2bn.
Construction work is due to begin in H1 2004 with production scheduled for
late 2005. The converted fab will start up with a 65nm process technology.
When completed, the converted Fab 12 will become Intels fifth 300mm fab.
Intel currently has two 300mm fabs in operation - one in Oregon and the
second in New Mexico. Two more 300mm facilities are under construction -
another in Oregon is to begin operations later this year, and a facility
currently under construction in Ireland is scheduled to begin in H1 2004.
Separately, the company plans to sell land in Texas that was bought in 1997
as part of a planned manufacturing facility. However, changes in
manufacturing technology and current construction projects at existing Intel
sites mean the property is no longer part of the companys future plans.
