While Samsung plans to boost its capital expenditure by 39%, Intel has got the knife out with a 17-26% cut in budget.

Samsung Electronics plans to increase its capital expenditure for semiconductor production from KRW4.2tr in 2002 to KRW5.0tr ($4.26bn) this year, a 39% increase. Semiconductor revenues in Q4 were KRW3.50tr, resulting in an operating profit of KRW0.87tr. In 2001, Q4 semiconductor sales were KRW2.05tr with operating losses at KRW0.21tr.

Intel released its Q4 and 2002 financial results along with its expenditure projections. R&D spending is set to equal last year's figure of $4.0bn. Capital expenditure is to be reduced from 2001's $4.7bn to $3.5-3.9bn. This will be targeted at the greater efficiency and lower costs provided by 300mm manufacturing.

Q4 sales were up 3% on the previous year at $7.2bn. Net income for the quarter was up 108% on 2001 at $1.0bn. Full year sales were up 1% at $26.8bn and net income grew 141% to $1.3bn.

The current quarter is expected to bring sales of $6.5-7.0bn.
