Council's Solar Project Achieves 1000th Property
Free electricity will be received by 1000 homes in Mid
Devon as part of a major new green initiative by Mid Devon District Council. Under
the scheme, many council houses across the district are being fitted with solar
panels to help the financial situation of tenants by generating savings of
around £150 a year on electricity bills, improve the energy efficiency of its
housing stock and reduce its CO2 emissions.
"We're delighted to have successfully met our target
and achieved the milestone 1000th install," commented Councillor Ray
Stanley, Cabinet Member for Housing.
"Thanks to a huge effort made by the team at Anesco
who are managing the install, we have been able to continue in our long term
ambitions to help reduce our emissions while helping tenants with spiralling
energy bills.
"The scale of the project and the installations has
been an amazing feat and we're proud of our success, especially when many other
local authorities ceased installing during a period of industry
uncertainty."
He added: "We would like to thank all Mid Devon
District Council tenants and local residents for their understanding and
patience throughout the process."
Mid Devon District Council's housing service is to
benefit under the scheme from an index-linked annual fee, paid by the
installer. This income will be used to install further energy-saving measures
in some of those houses not benefitting from the solar project.
Adrian Pike, CEO of Anesco, said: "Tenants are
benefiting from reduce energy bills, while the council is improving the energy
efficiency of its housing stock and reducing its CO2 emissions in line with
Government targets. It really is a win-win situation."
